Hazardous wastes are waste products that, in sufficient concentrations and quantities may pose a threat to our health and/or the environment when improperly stored, treated, and/or disposed.
In regulating hazardous waste, the EPA under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) utilizes a federal reference list of over 600 specific wastes. If not on the reference list, waste products are designated "hazardous" if they contain any of the following characteristics:
- Toxic - Harmful and/or fatal if absorbed or ingested.
- Corrosive - Very acidic, basic and/or capable of metal corrosion.
- Reactive - Highly unstable under normal conditions with the capability of explosions or the production of toxic fumes, vapors and gases when mixed with water.
- Ignitable - Potentially combustible under particular conditions.
